Brigitte was definitely confused. Ever since Volk had kissed her under that tree, he had been edgy and aloof. It made for a bit of an awkward situation between them. She wanted to ask him about it. She wasn’t shy, but RAID wasn’t the place to do it. Especially when they had a secret between them, one that was eating at the honest and straightforward agent who was a huge part of her.

They had finished going through the suicide bombing of the bus, which had confirmed it had been seventeen-year-old Sufian Izem. She found it interesting that all of the attackers were on the young side. Izem and, if her brother was involved, Etienne were both teenagers. The sniper looked to be in his early twenties. Whoever had recruited them had played on their youth.

They were watching the footage directly after the blast. Brigitte sat up straight. She tapped the key to stop the footage and peered at a man in the crowd.

“What is it?” Volk asked.

She pulled up the grainy photo Rose’s staff were currently searching for on CCTV footage. “This looks like the guy Rose is looking for. He was at the bomb blast?”

“Looks like it. That means he went directly to the hotel just after this incident.”

Brigitte nodded. She texted the information to Rose’s staffer, Michael.

She started the footage up again and watched him. While other people ran to help the survivors, others were on the phone to alert authorities, the guy in the baseball cap just stood there studying the crowd. He then sauntered off without doing anything for the victims. It was clear he was neither horrified, nor shocked.

A sick feeling settled in the pit of Brigitte’s stomach. She was terribly worried about her brother. If he was mixed up in this mess, that meant he was under the power of this unfeeling, uncaring man.

She dropped her head into her hands, taking a moment to breathe around her anxiety. Her muscles were primed to just leave here and go to Etienne’s school, pull him out of class, and grill him until he told her everything.

She felt a warm hand on the back of her neck, sending prickles of awareness down her back and into her scalp.

“What’s going on in there?” Volk asked.

“This guy is detached…merciless. He doesn’t care about anyone that he’s hurt. He had no remorse. This man is a killer. The thought of Etienne putting himself under this man’s thumb makes me scared for his life.”

He rubbed her back, and she felt like she was going to come out of her skin. She sat back and he dropped his hand. “Let’s watch the rest of this and hopefully we’ll get some answers.”

She started the tape again. People were screaming and crying, several of them walking around in a daze. Uninjured people with horror on their faces were just staring, also in shock, while others, looking calm and controlled, assisted. Police came, then Fire to put out the blaze. Ambulances started arriving with medical technicians hurrying to the injured.
